Gift Planning

Legacy Society

The Legacy Society consists exclusively of those individuals and families who have chosen to leave a permanent impact on Covenant Seminary by naming Covenant Theological Seminary Foundation in their estate plan. Members of the Legacy Society are long term investors in Covenant Seminary. Your membership in the Legacy Society will benefit our students and faculty for many generations to come and your gifts ensure the seminary's future capacity to spread the gospel of grace by training pastors.

Membership in the Legacy Society is conferred to all individuals who have named Covenant Theological Seminary or the Foundation as:

  • Simple bequest by will,
  • Beneficiary of a Charitable Remainder Trust or Charitable Gift Annuity,
  • Beneficiary of IRA or other qualified retirement plan,
  • Owner and beneficiary of a Life Insurance policy.

Steps to Membership

If you have already arranged for a bequest by will to Covenant Seminary or designated Covenant Seminary as a beneficiary of one of the above listed gifts, please notify us by completing the attached Legacy Society Membership Form and return it to us. Advance knowledge will help us to ensure that your gifts are used according to your intentions. If you would like to consider a gift of this nature, please let us know so that our development staff can help you and your advisors complete your gift in the most tax efficient way for your estate and fulfill your charitable intentions for Covenant Seminary.

What do Members Receive

Most importantly, members know that they have made a gift that will permanently impact the training of pastors for gospel ministry. Also, often gifts of this type are unrecognized because they come at the end of a donor's life. The Legacy Society provides a way for us to honor you today. Each Legacy Society member will receive a framed plaque and invitations to special events.

Particular Bequest Language

Donors can bequeath a specific amount or a percentage of their estate for either specific or general purposes. We suggest the following language:

  1. Bequest of cash - "I bequeath the sum of $XX,000 to Covenant Theological Seminary Foundation of St. Louis, MO to be used for (indicate gift purpose). If a gift purpose is added to a bequest please refer to our "Donation Guidelines for Permanent, Temporary and 'Named' Funds" for guidance.
  2. Bequest of a percent of the estate - "I devise and bequeath 50% of the remainder and residue of property owned at my death, whether real or personal, and wherever located to Covenant Theological Seminary Foundation of St. Louis, MO"
  3. Contingent Bequest - "If my brother John Doe survives me, I devise and bequeath 20% of the remainder and residue of property owned at my death, whether real or personal, and wherever located to John Doe. If John Doe does not survive me, then I devise and bequeath 20% of my residuary estate, whether real or personal property and wherever located to Covenant Theological Seminary Foundation of St. Louis, MO"
